Adventure

Stann Creek has a plethora of possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts, many of which are virtually on the doorstep of Macaroni Hill View Hotel. Several tours and activities can be arranged and these include: Davis Falls in Pomona Valley

Davis falls - Here is a waterfall tucked away in the Maya Mountains with the water cascading from some 500 feet high. Only the young or the young at heart are encouraged to take this 2 ½ hour trek which starts by vehicle and ends with an energetic hike to spectacular falls. Don't forget your bathing suit because the pool at the base of the falls is a wonderful spot for swimming, while its banks provide the perfect spot for a picnic. The view and swim in the waterfall is worth it!

Mayflower Bocawina National Park - Closer to home is the Mayflower Bocawina National Park which encompasses no less than three maya ruins including two partially excavated pyramids. They are accessible via pleasant graded walking trails which also take in impressive jungle waterfalls and a swimming hole. While there keep an eye out for the rare black howler monkeys along with exotic birds such as toucans and parrots.

Dangriga - The largest town in Southern Belize, is located 12 miles away from Macaroni Hill View Hotel. It's famous for its Garifuna culture, in particular their distinctive African-style music which mostly centers around drums. The Garifuna population stems back to a landing on 19th November 1823 of the Garifuna people from the island of St. Vincent. This date is celebrated every year in Dangriga with a popular fiesta which involves much drumming, dancing and sampling of Garifuna cuisine. But you don't need to wait until November for a taste of Garifuna culture as drumming workshops take place regularly and the music can be heard somewhere in town on most evenings. The Gulisi Garifuna museum, about 10 miles from the hotel, is also an excellent place to discover more as it offers an overview of the Garifuna history, customs, music and art.

Long before the Garifuna's had set foot in the area, the indigenous maya population had been living in Stann Creek. Around 300 descendants now reside in an area close to Cockscomb park, which includes the Maya Center where maya craftsmanship can be appreciated through demonstrations and purchases of the handicrafts. maya sites can also be visited such as the Pomona site situated within easy walking distance of Macaroni Hill View Hotel.

Out at the Cayes - Belize is home to the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere with hundreds of cayes (islands), many of which are a short trip from the coast. A day tour to the cayes can include fishing, snorkeling and relaxing on the beach.

Pomona Cave System - This cave system is only a 10 minutes walk from the hotel itself. It is believed that the ancient Maya used the cave system as a home and a safe house at time of war. The cave has numerous entrances and exits, all of which are interconnected. Pretend that you are Indiana Jones!

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary - Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary, just a few miles down the road, is a world-renowned reserve primarily dedicated to protecting the jaguar. But this is more than just a place to seek out these elusive felines, as it is also the home of hundreds of birds, plants, mammals, insects and reptiles who all co-habit the dense, tropical forest land as well as Victoria Peak, one of the highest points in Belize. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is Belize's best known national park with miles of nature trails, waterfalls, excellent birding and a visitor center.

The miles 16 water fall - This waterfall is a fun spot for the whole family to enjoy. Only 4 miles away from the hotel the fall is about 50 feet high. At base of the fall is a pool approximately 100 feet in diameter. A great place to be like Tarzan!
